Readying Your Car For Summer

Do you plan on a road trip this summer? I must admit with the price of gas, one might reconsider and fly! However, I am planning on quite a road trip.

It is a little scary for me to think of a long road trip since my car has 210,000 miles on it, but with a tuneup before I go, the mechanic says it should work great.  Sure hope he's right!

AAA has these suggestions for everyone, even if the trips you're taking are just in your immediate area.

1. Have your battery checked. You can check for corrosion yourself, or take it to the garage in your area.
2. Check the hoses. Rubber does not last forever. Inspect belts visually and feel the belts underside for cracking.
3. Tires should be checked for tread wear. The rule of thumb is to stick a penny in the tire tread (Lincoln's head down).  If the tread does not extend past Lincoln's head it's time for new tires. Everyone should check the tire pressure.
4. Air Conditioning: Have this checked out by your local car mechanic. Your trip may be miserable if your A/C conks out.
5. Have your engine's cooling system checked out. Is it time to have the coolant flushed and new coolant put in?

Pack an emergency kit.
1. Water and snacks
2. First aid kit
3. Duct tape
4. Flashlight and extra batteries
5. Blanket and warm clothes
6. Charged cell phone

Happy trails!
