The Summer Day

The Summer Day

By: Mary Oliver

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

While this peom may be  a little too serious for a lazy summer day, the message is there...
What do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Today, July 31st ,2011, here are what some people are doing...

Watching the sunrise over the summer lake.

Just happy being together.
Baking a delicious fresh lemon-blueberry cake for dinner guests tonight.

Attending a summer wedding on the beautiful shores of Lake Superior

Here's a great way to enjoy a summer day! Look at this view of the Mississippi River!

Having dinner with someone you care about.

Enjoying a lazy morning chatting with other regulars at Starbucks

Shopping with your daughter.
Enjoying quiet to get a new office set up.

Taking Great Grandma for some fresh air on a splendiferous day.

Playing with your children at the beach.

Enjoying the sunset on the Pacific.

What are you doing to eek out even one more second of your wild and precious life?
Thanks for your pictures. Life is so much more fun if you share it!
