Work Ethic


Can you imagine what it would be like to have to "hitch up" the horse and buggy to go to the store? Think of the work ethic "back in the day"! Glad those days are behind us, but think of the strong work ethic of our forefathers.
Although I am not a fan of many of Donald Trump's ideas, I do think his 3 children have a strong work ethic. For that I give him credit. It is easy to give your children things you did not have or things you can afford, some of which may not be in their best interest to promote a sense of accomplishment or self satisfaction.
This was written about Trump's ideas on raising children with a strong work ethic, you can see these ideas are not just for the wealthy, but for everyone who wants their children to succeed.
Among Trump's tips: "Set the standard high. Challenge is good, and accomplishment creates healthy self-respect. Stress the importance of education; it's the foundation for success. (And let) them know they are exceptional, so exceptional results are expected."
A friend on mine in education said something similar, "If you don't set high expectations for your children, nobody will."
There's not just the acknowledgement but also the deep, internalized recognition that a family's wealth involved some kind of awe-inspiring journey." Allow them to start their own "awe-inspiring journey" to wealth and personal fulfillment.
"When you're working hard and waking up at 6 a.m., it's not possible to stay out until 2 a.m. on a Wednesday night." A good worker is a worker that is sober and rested, ready to concentrate on the tasks at hand.
You start teaching your children good a work ethic at a young age. They learn by example, by life lessons and by expectations. It's the old lesson, "an honest day's pay for an honest day's work". I think it's difficult to teach children these lessons sometimes, as it appears we had it easy. We didn't have to hitch up the horse and buggy, we didn't have to spend the day working the fields. We sat at desks on the phone, or on the computer. We made it look easy. How do you convey "a work ethic" when you use your brain not your brawn? The answer is having a positive attitude about your work, going to work sober and rested, being on time, leaving on time (or when the work is finished), speaking respectfully about your work/company, telling the truth about "sick days" and giving 110% when you're on the clock.
